RESIN VENEERS
Composite (plastic) resin veneers
may be placed on your teeth to correct misshapen or diseased tooth structure.
You should be aware of the following information about your restorations:
Chewing
As with natural teeth, avoid chewing excessively hard foods on the veneered
teeth (hard candy, Cornnuts, ice, bones, etc.) because the resin material can
become separated from the tooth under extreme force. In the event a
breakage occurs, repair or replacement of a restoration is usually not
difficult.
Recalls
Visit us at regular, six-month examination periods. Often, problems that
develop around the veneers can be found at an early stage and can be repaired
easily, while waiting for a longer time may require redoing the entire
restoration. We will contact you when it is time for your recall
appointment.
Preventive Procedures
To provide optimum longevity of your restorations and to prevent future dental
decay and supporting tissue breakdowns, please use the following preventive
procedures that are checked:
| a. |
Brush
and floss after eating and before bedtime. |
| b. |
Swish
vigorously for at least 30 seconds daily with one of the following
products: (1) Colgate Fluorigard; (2) Johnson & Johnson
Act; or (3) Listermint with fluoride (0.05 percent neutral
sodium fluoride). The best time is immediately before bedtime. |
| c. |
Use
Prevident 5000 high fluoride toothpaste. (This is a
prescription-only product.) |
The Future
We expect you will receive years of service from composite veneers.
However, after watching veneers for many years, we have seen the following
situations occur occasionally. They are unavoidable and may require
restoration replacement:
| a. |
Depending
on the foods you eat and other factors, a slight change in the color
of the veneers may occur over a period of years. When the color
change is objectionable to you, the veneers may be replaced. |
| b. |
Some
veneers may demonstrate slight stains at some spots around the edges.
Please tell us if this condition occurs. This is usually very
easy to correct. |
| c. |
The
gums (gingiva) may recede from the veneers, displaying discolored
teeth structure underneath. This condition usually takes place
over several years and may require veneer replacement. |
We are happy to answer any
questions you may have about composite veneers. Thank you
