CHLOREXIDENE GLUCONATE (PERIDEX & OTHER BRANDS)

Chlorhexidene gluconate is an antimicrobial agent which has been used for decades to kill bacteria on hospital surfaces and in surgical soap.  In the late 1980s, Chlorhexidene is available in a mouthwash which has been shown to be extremely effective at fighting the bacteria that grow in the mouth.

To reduce inflammation in your gums, we often prescribe or dispense an antimicrobial mouth rinse for a few weeks.  This practice will make our restorative treatment easier for you by making your gum tissue healthier.

Please use the mouth rinse as follows:  one time per day just before bedtime after cleaning your mouth and rinsing thoroughly, dip your toothbrush into a capful of the solution and brush into all of your teeth. Yes, I am well aware that the label says RINSE with the product - please disregard this instruction and use it as directed on your toothbrush. It is far more effective to use it in this way. You may rinse your mouth after using the rinse, but be aware that water will taste unusual for about 20 minutes.

NOTE:  The only side effect of daily use of Chlorhexidene is the potential for staining which can result from the dead bacteria which are left on the teeth.  This stain is easily removed during a regular cleaning and is not injurious to the teeth in any way -- however, it does indicate that the teeth are not being thoroughly brushed. If the product is used on a toothbrush (as I recommend), staining will not become a problem.

Thank you for your cooperation.
