FirstMoonStep's
founder Dr. William Hartel meeting Apollo 16
commander John Young after a speech in Scotland in
2000. Dr. Hartel has been a fan of the manned space
program since the days of the Gemini missions. He
considers himself extremely fortunate for having met
all 12 of the men who walked on the moon. He met his
first Apollo astronaut (Dave Scott, commander of
Apollo 15) at Chicago's Adler Planetarium in 1979
when his models of the Lunar Excursion Module was
on display. |

Young performs a leaping salute of the flag during
his April 1972 mission. He and LM pilot Charlie Duke
spent 13 hours exploring the lunar surface. They
returned more than 200 pound of moon rocks to the
Earth for further study. Along with James Lovell
(Apollo 8 and 13) and Gene Cernan (Apollo 10
and 17), Young is one of only 3 men who has made the
trip to the moon twice. |
